What rules does GYGSA follow?

GYGSA follows Texas Diamond rules, which are based on USA Softball (formerly ASA) regulations, with league-specific modifications outlined in the GYGSA Rules of Play.

If there is any conflict between general rulebooks and GYGSA’s published Rules of Play, the GYGSA rules take precedence.

If a situation is not covered in the rules, decisions made by the Board of Directors are final. For more information click here.

What are the sportsmanship expectations?

GYGSA maintains a strict No Tolerance Policy for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Coaches, players, parents, and spectators are expected to demonstrate respect for officials, opponents, teammates, and league volunteers.

Violations may result in immediate removal from the facility and further disciplinary action.

Can my child play if she has never played softball before?

Yes. GYGSA is a recreational youth softball league focused on development. All skill levels are welcome.

Can my child play up in an older division?

Players may request to be evaluated to play up during Skills Assessments. Coaches and the Board will evaluate readiness and safety before approving placement.

What happens if we miss Skills Assessments?

All registered players will be placed on a team.

However, players who do not attend Skills Assessments are not eligible to be drafted by name and will be assigned to teams through the blind draw (“Hat Pick”) process after assessed players have been selected.

Attendance is strongly encouraged to ensure balanced teams.

How are teams drafted?

The draft follows a serpentine (snake) format.

• Draft order is determined by blind draw
• Each team may protect two players (with specific rules and limitations)
• The sister rule applies within divisions
• Players who do not attend Skills Assessments are assigned through blind draw

Full draft procedures are outlined in the league’s Rules of Play.

Are pickup players allowed?

Fall Season:
Teams may pick up up to two players if they cannot field the minimum required players. Pickup players must be in the same age division or younger.

Spring Season:
Pickup players are not permitted for official games. If a team cannot field the minimum required players, the game is ruled a technical forfeit.

Tournament pickup rules vary and require Board approval.

What equipment is required?

Players must wear:

• Team jersey
• Softball pants
• Cleats (metal cleats are not allowed)
• Batting helmet with face mask
• Defensive face mask (required for all fielders)

Catchers must wear full protective gear including helmet, chest protector, and shin guards.

All bats must meet USA/ASA fastpitch standards.
